In case you’re not familiar, the paleo diet is based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. These are foods that could be obtained by hunting and gathering, typically including lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. 

A paleo diet limits foods like dairy products, legumes and grains and processed flours since the Paleolithic era pre-dated crop cultivation and farming, and raising animals for meat or milk. Processed foods in any form are not allowed, and meat should be grass fed, as it resembles the natural diet of roaming animals.

Honey is the only sugar that’s allowed on the diet, as refined sugar did not exist in that era. Salt intake is limited, since our ancestors didn’t exactly use processed salt.

Studies show that the paleo diet may help with glucose tolerance and promoting normal blood sugar levels (1). Other research has shown that it can help promote a healthy metabolism, normal blood pressure, and overall weight management as well (2).
